Get Six Feet Under - The Complete Fourth Season Online Right Now!

This penultimate season of Six Feet Under continus further down the darkly disturbing path so evident in the third season. To be sure, the signature–and ultimately undefinable–blend of tragic mishap with tripped-out comic eccentricity that has stamped the series from its debut remains pervasive. It’s the concentration of the mix that has changed. Leavening moments seem less organic, much as the bizarre death sequnces that open each episode often turn out to be rather contrived preludes to the ensuing thematic obsessions. Which isn’t to say season 4 lacks the delightfully memorable quirkiness fans have grown to expect. Recurring incidents of fecal revenge bring tensions to the surface between Ruth (Frances Conroy) and her new husband George (James Cromwell), in turn leading to young intern Arthur’s resignation (Rainn Wilson’s spot-on characterization is so enjoyable that his self-imposed exile from the Fisher nest early in the season is a real loss). Ruth meanwhile hooks up again briefly with the irrepressible Bettina (Kathy Bates) for an excursion south of the border.

But brooding glimpses into chaos beneath the surface provide the emotional momentum of this season, right from the opening scene, as Nate (Peter Krause) inevitably gravitates back toward Brenda (Rachel Griffiths) in the aftermath of his wife’s death. As usual, writers and directors vary for each episode, but the dark eccentricities of creator Alan Ball’s original characters have become more sharply focused and sustained. We seem to spend even more time viewing the world through individual points of view: Nate’s roiling anger and grief or Claire’s (Lauren Ambrose) newfound sexual and artistic experimentation as she learns about “grinding the corn” and attains respect as a photographer. The toxicity of relationships continus to be a preoccupation. We get the Ruth-George meltdown as well as the painful unraveling of Rico’s (Freddy Rodriguz) marriage to Vanessa (Justina Machado). But the most harrowing episode follows David (Michael C. Hall) through an increasingly perilous carjacking. This nightmarish fugu, midway through, ripples out into the rest of the season, posing another threat to his tenuous relationship with Keith (Matthew St. Patrick). It sets a course for further apocalyptic imagery of environmental collapse and fallout shelters. There’s little to gentle the downward slide and exposure of vulnerability, save taking refuge in the quirkiness that seems to be the Fishers’ birthright. But that, as they say, is to die for. –Thomas May

Springfield Rifle, one of five films included in this set, may miss the bullseye as a tru Gary Cooper classic, but there’s a line that speaks to his enduring status as a screen icon and “American Legend.” In this 1952 Western, his follow-up film to High Noon, Cooper’s character has been drummed out of the army and branded a coward. Suffice to say that all is not what it seems, and an observer is asked how Coop will handle the pressure. The response: “He’ll stand up.” That is quintessential Cooper. He’s a stand-up guy, and the “dang swangest hero,” as he is hailed in Sergeant York, this collection’s calling card. Directed by Howard Hawks and co-written by John Huston, Sergeant York earned Cooper an Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Alvin York, a Tennessee mountain hellraiser who finds religion after surviving a lightning strike. His newfound pacifist beliefs are put to the supreme test when he is forced to enlist in WWI. Cooper also displays the (Frank Lloyd) Wright stuff as architect Harold Roark in The Fountainhead (1949), adapted for the screen by Ayn Rand from her towering and controversial bestselling novel about a “fool visionary” who refuses to compromise his principles or conform his work to popular taste. The Wreck of the Mary Deare (1959), his penultimate film, finds Cooper desperately trying to clear his name before an inquiry determines what really happened aboard the mysteriously abandoned eponymous ship. Costar Charlton Heston gives him a run for Most Piercing Blu Eyes honors. Last, and least, but still entertaining, is Dallas (1950), in which Cooper stars as a Confederate outlaw who impersonates a sheriff to settle an old score. Cooper is not the most chameleon-esqu of actors, but in these representative films, he displays intriguing shadings to his heroic persona. Roark in The Fountainhead has a definite dark side, while his “Reb” Hollister in Dallas is something of a rascal.

Of the DVD presentations, Sergeant York gets the two-disc “Special Edition” treatment, with dry, but informative commentary by film historian Jeanne Basinger, a made-for-cable TV special about Cooper hosted by Clint Eastwood, and a welcome Warner Bros. cartoon, Tex Avery’s “Porky’s Preview” and short subject, “Lions for Sale,” that replicate an old fashioned night out at the movies. The Fountainhead DVD includes a featurette about the making of the film. Cooper stands alone among Hollywood’s leading men, but beyond his formidable presence, classic film buffs will bask in the nostalgic pleasures of Max Steiner’s music in four of the five films, and appearances by great character actors (Walter Brennan and George Tobias in Sergeant York, a young Richard Harris in Mary Deare). –Donald Liebenson

Beyond that, it’s no mystery why generations of dog-loving audiences have marveled at the precocious collie’s career–Lassie is a great actor. She so convincingly digs impossible trenches, leaps towering fences, swims raging rivers, knocks out bad guys, and betrays the essence of brokenheartedness with her bedraggled coat and woebegone expressions that it’s sometimes hard to shake the suspicion that she’s really an incredibly limber person in a cute dog suit. All told, Lassie Come Home delivers a lot to love, not the least of which is the deeply dramatic score–quirky sounding to the modern ear–which returns audiences to simpler, irony-free times, as does the movie’s message of loyalty at all costs. –Tammy La Gorce
